Preparing for the Storm

What is it about the time between learning that a fall storm may be approaching your home area, and the eve of its arrival? For me it is like being held in a space where everything is on "pause". A few days ago, I was checking to see if there were any tropical storms that might come up the Eastern Seaboard, and at some point impact on our province. There was nothing. Then yesterday , Environment Canada posted a notice of a possible cyclone that might bring us some wind and rain. From that point, there has been a pall outside. The wind has died completely. We are having showers, and last night in the middle of the night, a sharp clap of thunder followed by smaller rolls, and torrential rain for a period of time. Again all was silent. This morning we had some light showers, no breeze, and an odd looking sky, grey and yellow.  I am definitely a weather watcher, and after living through Dorion in my small cottage on the Northumberland Strait, and believing that I would not survive the night, I was anxious to get everything possible under cover at the shore, get our winter house ready for the weather event, and prepare to be without power for several days. All that is done, and now the waiting begins. I will be at the cottage one more night, and then head inland before the wind and rain make travel impossible.

These storms fascinate me. Nature has such beauty and such power. I see it every day here on the Strait. The ocean can be like a mirror in the morning, and by noon the wind can be howling, and the waters in the Strait with their white crests, crash on the shore accompanied by an awesome noise. The sun can drive humans to seek shelter during a hot and humid day, faces flushed and sweat pouring off bodies, and then, shivering, and checking for frostbite, we can also seek shelter from the cold winds, the snow and ice of winter.  We are such frail creatures in the face of nature.

But the weather is not my only interest. Very recently our great grandson has moved into a "big boy" bed from his crib. He also has a new baby brother. A number of changes for this two year old. Since he loves tractors, I made him a tractor quilt, using a panel, and some companion fabrics. I think it is really cute. I'm also working on my post for Carol Swift's new blog hop Queen of Gadgets.    There's also a Hallowe'en sew along with Fort Myers Fabric Studio . I'm a bit behind with my blocks, but that is fine with me.

Now to share a picture of the boy and his tractor, plus a picture of his quilt:

Well that is it for this time. There are some really cool ideas from the bloggers who have posted in the hop to this point. I plan to revisit each one because there is so much good stuff to see.
Wishing all beings peace, safety and freedom
Lynn
